Serving authentic Japanese fare, eatTOKYO offers a variety of dishes from the Land of the Rising Sun, from a wide range of sushi to udon and to massive plates of Japanese curry. Aside from Düsseldorf, it is also located in other major cities such as Tokyo, London, and Bonn.

Located in Immermannstraße, or Little Tokyo as some call it due to a considerable number of Japanese establishments and people living in and around the area, eatTOKYO is a popular Japanese restaurant that operates in major cities such as Tokyo, London, Bonn, and Düsseldorf, with the last one being the establishment where we dined at. We were fortunate to get a table as all of the restaurants in the area were packed to the brim (a bald-faced lie), and I had to fight about 12 people all at once in a no-holds-barred tournament to the death to secure that table (it is nothing but the honest truth).

We started on an adventurous note with the Natto (€3.50), a traditional Japanese dish made of fermented soybeans and probably the best candidate for being the poster child for “acquired taste” foods. The smell, the distinctive taste, and the texture (which becomes even more, slimier once you stir it which is the recommended way to eat it) are definitely not for everyone, but hey, you can’t knock it unless you try it! We did not finish it, but it was still an exciting experience, and I would certainly like to try it again next time (probably by myself because my friend doesn’t feel the same way)! You should too because who knows, you may like it!

To quench the thirst and to wash the taste of the natto away, we ordered drinks, and I got myself a glass of the refreshing (yup) and calming Oolong Tea (€2.20), as well as a glass of unfun Coke (€2.20).

My friend and I went for the Normal-sized Chicken-Katsu Curry (€10.90) for the main dish, and I was expecting the curry to come in a, you know, a normal-sized plate, but it was HUGE (in capital letters for emphasis!)! I could not even fathom how massive the Tokyo Big size option (€13.90) would’ve been and how long it would’ve taken me to finish it because even the “Normal size” curry felt like a challenge, but it may also be due to eating so much food throughout the day (which is the excuse my bruised ego would like to go with).
Aside from the gargantuan size, the Chicken-Katsu Curry had many more things to discuss: the divine aroma that just pulls you in, the harmony of the spices in the curry, which resulted in a delicious flavor, and the soft carrots and potatoes that soaked in the curry. The Chicken Katsu (fried chicken made with panko) was fantastic as well, and the fried and crispy chicken went pretty well with the thick curry, a delightful contrast that I definitely loved.
(The dish also came with a bowl of Miso Soup that I forgot to take a picture of, but it was decent, and I had finished it in one sip!)

All in all, we had a lovely dinner at eatTOKYO, and the Chicken-Katsu Curry was definitely to die for. We’ll come back for sure next time to try their extensive sushi menu and udon and to conquer the Tokyo Big sized curries, and I hope you pay them a visit too to try their great selection of food!
Let me know if you have tried the “Tokyo Big” sized dishes at eatTOKYO and how you survived after eating all that!!
