A Brief Introduction to Düsseldorf
Düsseldorf is located in the North Rhine-Westphalia region and is the seventh largest city in Germany. It is an important center for finance, media and telecommunications, and fashion (it has been dubbed the fashion capital of the country). It is also home to a huge Japanese community where many live in and around the famous Immermannstraße, which is a Japanese street that somehow teleported into the West. Be it shopping, dining, or immersing oneself in the arts and culture, Düsseldorf is a fantastic city that everyone should definitely visit!
Getting There

As a central transport hub, traveling to Düsseldorf is a cinch. You can take the DB or the ICE train to Düsseldorf Hbf, which has connections to many major cities, or take a flight to Düsseldorf Airport (also called the Rhein-Ruhr Airport). On top of that, exploring within the city is very convenient too, thanks to the excellent city railway system (which is much more reliable compared to the DB train stations), trams, buses, and taxis, along with rideshare apps.
Introduction
I’ve always wanted to visit the glorious city of Düsseldorf for a multitude of reasons: to rejuvenate my broken soul (sorry, Beyoncé, work is just too draining) at the stunning Japanese garden (which we didn’t end up going to), to shop and dine at all of the stores and restaurants in Immermannstraße, to admire the view of the city from the Rheinturm (about that…), and lastly but not the least, UNIQLO! That was why I was so glad when my friend and I chose the city as our next travel destination, as I knew we were about to have a great time!
Mission: EAT, EAT, & EAT!
A Delicious Lunch at Korea House Restaurant 🍽
We were so hungry when we reached Düsseldorf that I remember my stomach eating itself, but thankfully Korea House was not that far of a walk from Düsseldorf Hbf so we got there pretty quick. It was crazy busy so we had to brace ourselves for the disappointment, but thankfully there was a table for the two of us that was available, and we were able to keep ourselves alive with the delicious food!

Wandering Around Little Tokyo

We still had an hour and a half or so before check-in, but the wait wasn’t bad at all as we spent our time looking in and around Immermannstraße (also known as Little Tokyo), where we visited a couple of shops selling a variety of Japanese goods such as manga and teaware. We also stopped by Hanaro Market and bought ourselves some snacks and a bottle of citrus soju (which, if I may add, was quite amazing!).

☆ LLAMASODA HI-light : We saw many great shops, but for me personally DaBamDaBoo was the most wonderful to browse around!
Checking in at me and all 🏨
After browsing around Immermannstraße, we arrived just on time for check-in at the me and all hotel, and after freshening up and leaving our baggage in our room, we were ready to head out and begin exploring the delightful city of Düsseldorf!

Tea Time at So Bo Ro Korean Bakery 🍽
Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t cooperating as it (literally) rained on our parade, and the winds were so strong that I swear it could’ve taken us to the land of Oz. However, we weren’t letting it dampen our spirits, so we pressed on like valiant warriors… For about two minutes or so until we chose to seek shelter and wait until the rain died down at the So Bo Ro Korean Bakery, where we scarfed down some delicious treats!

Onwards, to the Rheinturm 🗼

We headed towards the Rheinturm (also known as the Rhine Tower) after the rain died down, and along the way, we passed through Schadowstraße and the Altstadt, which had a variety of shops to look around (including a UNIQLO!). After a decent walk (and a little bit of city scooter action), we finally reached the ginormous tower that stood in front of us.

However, the experience turned out to be a little disappointing for me as there wasn’t an observation deck but a restaurant instead, meaning that to enjoy the view, you’d have to wiggle your way through some tables and chairs, and worse, wiggling through tables and chairs that other guests are using.
Our next destination was the Wheel of Vision, a Ferris wheel that was around the same area (actually, it’s a little further out, but this is what I always say to people so they can work those legs. I’m such an angel!), but just like with the waffle place in Mainz, it was nowhere to be found! But we later discovered that it was a seasonal attraction, so we had to give up the pointless search.

A Hearty Dinner at eatTokyo 🍽
Famished and tired, we got back to Immermannstraße and foolishly thought we could just step into one of the many great restaurants on the street, only to find out that all of them were packed to the brim (I know I always over-exaggerate but for this instance, it was really true!). Thankfully eatTOKYO had a table available for us, and we got to have a lovely dinner! We (or my friend really) even got to try something new too: the ever-divisive Natto, which, if you haven’t yet, you should definitely try!

A Drink at 1oder8 🍻
After our wonderful meal at eatTOKYO, we went back to the hotel to relax and let our poor feet (which you can see in all of their glory here) rest for a little while before heading out to 1oder8 izakaya to grab a drink. I had the delightful Kiwi Sour while my friend had the Lemon Sour, and we spent a couple of minutes enjoying the vibe and by talking about the most depressive topics ever (love that!)!
Once we were done, we had planned (okay, only *I* had planned) to visit a nearby karaoke joint (the ones in Düsseldorf are just like the karaoke bars you find in Asia where you can rent a private booth to enjoy singing just with your friends and to also save you from public humiliation), but luck worked in my friend’s favor as it was occupied and a reservation had to be made prior, which we didn’t do. Since there wasn’t really much to do and the fatigue was beginning to kick in again, we headed back to the hotel and went to bed, with prayers and pleas being made to the gods above and the devils below in hopes of the following day being blessed with great weather…

Breakfast at Birdie & Co. 🍽
…which all went unanswered as we woke up to the most soul-sucking weather imaginable: gloomy skies, rain, and strong winds. But we were still adamant about making the most of our trip, so we decided to go to Birdie & Co. in Mittelstraße and start Day 2 with some great breakfast. The delicious food and the relaxing atmosphere certainly helped us shake some of the negative energy off, and then we took off for Immermannstraße again for a quick boba run after we were done.

A Quick Boba Run at Sphere Bay Manga Cafe 🧋
We didn’t have much time to spare as we had to take the train back to our homes much earlier due to the usual shenanigans with the DB, so I just got my drink, the milky and sweet Leopard Milk Tea, went upstairs, took pictures for the #llamasodaquickbites post (the things I do for this darn blog I swear), sat down for about 6 or 7 minutes and then we took the train to Düsseldorf Hbf, and then our trains back home.

Final Thoughts

Aside from the atrocious weather, which not only dampened the grounds we walked on but our spirits as well (my way with words is just pure art), our trip to Düsseldorf was a very great one. Although we didn’t really visit any landmarks or museums aside from maybe the Rheinturm and Immermannstraße, we browsed a lot of shops and ate at delicious restaurants and cafes, so I’m not too upset about it. And hey, more the reason to come back to this great city, especially when the weather is a lot better!
So yes, Düsseldorf is a must-visit, especially if you enjoy Japanese culture and also like shopping, as there is so much to do here!
Mission results: Passed, but come back again when the weather is good!
