Birdie & Co. Dusseldorf (Mittelstraße)

With delicious food and refreshing beverages all made from natural ingredients and being open all year round, Birdie & Co. is one of the best places to have breakfast and lunch (or get the best of both worlds with brunch!) in Düsseldorf!

We have a saying in Nepali that goes, “खाने मुखलाई जुंगाले छेक्दैन” (yes, I did not type that by myself) which means that for someone who is hungry, they won’t let their mustache get in their way. In our case, the “mustache” was the depressing weather, which around this time of the year is pretty standard in Germany, but it somehow was even worse, but we were hungry, and almost everything in Germany gets closed on a Sunday (this is a year-round thing however), so we were ready to brave through the pouring rain and the howling winds to get to Birdie & Co. in Mittelstraße to sate our hunger.

After a long, tiring trek (it was just a five or six-minute walk from the train station), we finally reached the café, which was quite busy (understandable since it was one of the few places that were open on a Sunday) but thankfully the staff were swift and attentive which we very much appreciated, so we got our menus and begun ordering right away!

Breakfast Cookie (€3.20)

To start the meal with something small and sweet to nibble on, I ordered myself the homemade Breakfast Cookie (€3.20), which to me felt more like a chunky, crunchy mini cake than a cookie (which is absolutely not a complaint at all!), and I really liked the nuts and the cranberries that were in the cookie. Pretty simple but still great!

Pain au Chocolat (€2.80)

The Pain au Chocolat (€2.80) (or “Chocolate Croissant” if you’re a filthy subhuman), another sweet treat that I had ordered, came in next and was equally delicious as the Breakfast Cookie. I loved the flaky and soft croissant and the delectable chocolate filling, and while it was great on its own, I feel like it would’ve been even more delightful when eaten alongside a cup of coffee. I certainly would have liked to test out my little theory as Birdie & Co. did have a varied selection of coffee (you can take a look at the menu here), but unfortunately, coffees are a laxative to me, and I had a five-hour train ride to get on, so I hope you give the cafe a visit and test it for yourself!

(€3.90)

For my beverage of choice for the meal, I chose the GREENS 1 cold-pressed juice, which included spinach, romaine lettuce, celery, cucumber, parsley, and kale. It was fresh and crisp and was the perfect drink to bring a little pep to my step!

I then ordered the Goat Brot (€5.90) (“Brot” meaning “bread” in Deutsch), a delicious toasted sandwich that consisted of goat cream cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, basil, and a spread of delightful pesto. Every ingredient complemented one another, with the crisp lettuce and the juicy tomatoes bringing a pop of light and freshness to contrast the richness of the goat cream cheese, which in turn mellowed the sharpness of the pesto, and all of this (to no one’s surprise) resulted in an absolutely fantastic sandwich!

Birdie & Co. (the Mittelstraße café to be specific) is the ideal place to grab a bite and start your day before you look around at all the incredible sights and activities Düsseldorf offers, with most of them conveniently nearby the area! We had a lovely meal that lifted our spirits as all the clouds and the rain were getting to us (as soon as we stepped outside, we were back to being miserable again), and I, for one, am very grateful!
